1 April 2026 - BRUNEI DARUSSALAM’S STATEMENT ON THE RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Brunei Darussalam strongly condemns the repeated attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon, including on 29 and 30 March 2026 which resulted in the loss of lives and injuries of Indonesian peacekeepers, and on 6 March 2026 injuring several Ghanaian peacekeepers.

These continued attacks on United Nations (UN) peacekeepers are wholly unjustifiable and constitute clear violations of international law. Brunei Darussalam recognises that these deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law and of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.

Brunei Darussalam expresses its deepest sympathy and condolences for the three Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeepers who were killed and wishes the injured UNIFIL peacekeepers a full and speedy recovery. We also extend our solidarity to all other troop‑contributing countries whose personnel continue to serve under increasingly dangerous conditions.

We strongly urge the relevant party, the Occupying Power in Palestine, to uphold its obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property, particularly in Lebanon, at all times, including refraining from any actions that endanger peacekeepers.

Brunei Darussalam reaffirms its support for UNIFIL in its vital role in maintaining peace and stability in southern Lebanon, and underscore the importance of ensuring that peacekeeping operations can be carried out safely, effectively, and without hindrance.

We further urge the UN Security Council (UNSC) to adopt immediate and concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of UNIFIL personnel and assets, as well as the protection of civilians, particularly in light of the escalating situation in the region. Brunei Darussalam further calls on the UNSC to take immediate action against the ongoing transgressions committed with impunity by the Occupying Power in Palestine and Lebanon.

We remain deeply concerned over the ongoing situation in Lebanon and Palestine, including the recent expansionist agenda by the Occupying Power in Palestine, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation. We also strongly condemn their recent laws which discriminately target Palestinians.
