His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen Ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, attended a Treaty Event during the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States of America.
His Royal Highness deposited Brunei Darussalam’s Instrument of Ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, also known as the BBNJ Agreement. The deposit of the Instrument of Ratification marks Brunei Darussalam's formal commitment to the BBNJ Agreement and will enable Brunei Darussalam to participate fully in its implementation.
His Royal Highness attended the 19th Ministerial Meeting of the Global Governance Group (3GMM) and the ASEAN – Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Singapore to the United Nations in New York.
His Royal Highness at the 19th 3GMM, under the theme, “Building an AI-Ready Country”, highlighted the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support development, including in enhancing productivity, education, healthcare and public services, while underscoring the importance of AI as an important tool for development and should be accompanied by sensible safeguards.
His Royal Highness at the ASEAN-GCC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting underscored the need to address immediate regional security challenges through diplomacy and respect for international law, while strengthening ASEAN-GCC economic resilience through greater cooperation on energy security, trade, and supply chain diversification.
His Royal Highness also held bilateral meetings at the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
His Royal Highness met with His Excellency Lê Hoài Trung, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. Both sides reaffirmed the excellent bilateral cooperation under the Comprehensive Partnership and looked forward to commemorating the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, including through exchanges of high-level visits. Both sides also expressed their commitment to further deepening ties in areas of mutual interest.
His Royal Highness also met with His Excellency Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar. Both sides welcomed the warm and long-standing ties between the two countries, which in 2026 mark 35 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in areas of mutual interest including exchanges of high-level visits, connectivity and through international organisations. Both sides also exchanged views on pressing regional and international issues.
