19 September 2026 - BRUNEI DARUSSALAM’S STATEMENT ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Brunei Darussalam expresses its deep concern over reports of an attempted drone attack near Makkah Al-Mukarramah on 15 September 2026. We stand in solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and commend the steps taken to ensure the safety of its residents, pilgrims and the Holy Sites. Makkah Al-Mukarramah and the Holy Sites hold profound religious significance for Muslims around the world. Their safety, security and sanctity must be respected and protected at all times.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions and continued hostilities across multiple fronts in the Middle East. Brunei Darussalam remains profoundly concerned over the impact of the ongoing conflicts on civilians across the region which continue to have serious humanitarian, security and economic consequences.

Continued unrestrained aggression risks further worsening the conflict within the region and beyond, with grave consequences for human life, regional stability while undermining efforts to achieve a durable cessation of hostilities, including in Palestine, Iran and Lebanon.

We stress the importance of protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and call for full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all States, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations (UN). All parties must uphold their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law.

Brunei Darussalam also underscores the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and reiterates that the restoration of freedom of navigation and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz remains an urgent priority. We underline that safe and unimpeded navigation is vital to international trade, energy security and global supply chains.

Brunei Darussalam reaffirms that the plight of the Palestinians remains at the core of the conflict in the Middle East, and we support all efforts aimed at creating conditions towards achieving lasting peace in the region through dialogue and diplomacy.
