16 June 2026 - BRUNEI DARUSSALAM’S STATEMENT ON THE RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Brunei Darussalam welcomes the agreement reached on a Memorandum of Understanding between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America as an important step towards de-escalation and promoting peace, security and stability in the Middle East.

We commend the steadfast commitment and pivotal role played by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and the mediating roles of the State of Qatar, the Sultanate of Oman, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Republic of Türkiye in facilitating constructive diplomatic engagements.

Brunei Darussalam urges all parties to abide by and faithfully fulfil their obligations in upholding and implementing their commitments under the MOU in a constructive manner. We underscore the importance of maintaining the maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

We further urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from actions that could undermine ongoing diplomatic progress, and remain committed to dialogue and peaceful settlement of disputes.

Brunei Darussalam reaffirms its support for international and regional efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the Middle East through dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law.
