BRUNEI DARUSSALAM'S STATEMENT ON
THE RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Brunei Darussalam strongly condemns the attacks by the Occupying Power in Palestine on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in an explosion in Sidon, Southern Lebanon, on 7 November 2024 that led to three civilian deaths, injuries of three Lebanese armed officials and six members of the Malaysian Peacekeeping Battalion (MALBATT) 850-12.
The deliberate and repeated attacks on UN peacekeepers are completely indefensible, constituting a blatant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006).
Brunei Darussalam reiterates the call on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of UNIFIL peacekeepers including its assets and the protection of civilians, particularly as the situation continues to escalate in the region. We further call on the UNSC to take action against the impunity of the Occupying Power that jeopardizes international peace and security, through its continued violation of international law and relevant UNSC resolutions.
Brunei Darussalam reaffirms its support to UNIFIL in its crucial role to ensure peace and stability, and further stresses the importance of sustained peacekeeping operations, including the need to safeguard the unhindered efforts of the UNIFIL. We wish the injured Lebanese armed officials and Malaysian peacekeeping troops a speedy recovery.
We strongly urge the international community to uphold international law, the UN Charter and relevant UN resolutions by taking decisive actions against the ongoing transgressions of the Occupying Power in Palestine and Lebanon.
