BRUNEI DARUSSALAM'S STATEMENT ON

THE RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Brunei Darussalam strongly condemns the recent air strikes on the Islamic Republic of Iran's military sites in three provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam.

This constitutes a serious violation of international law and the United Nations (UN) Charter, including the respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of any country.

While acknowledging it is the right of sovereign states to defend against foreign aggressive acts, based on the inherent right of self-defence, as reflected in Article 51 of the UN Charter, Brunei Darussalam expresses deep concern on the cycle of attacks and retaliation, risking escalating uncontrollably the ongoing conflict in Palestine and Lebanon into a regional level.

Brunei Darussalam calls on all parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint and prevent further expansion of the conflict in the interest of safeguarding regional peace and stability. We underscore that the latest attacks should not divert attention from the ongoing conflict in Palestine and Lebanon.

Brunei Darussalam reiterates its urgent calls on the United Nations Security Council to assume its legal and moral responsibilities, especially to stop the killings of innocent civilians and the use of forced starvation of the Palestinian population, all of which amount to acts of genocide by the Occupying Power.
