BRUNEI DARUSSALAM'S STATEMENT ON

THE RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Brunei Darussalam is deeply concerned over the serious escalation of violence in the Middle East, which now threatens peace and security across the wider region.

We condemn the continued aggression by the Occupying Power in Palestine as well as its indiscriminate attacks in Lebanese territories. We strongly urge all parties to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation of violence in the interest of safeguarding regional and international peace, security, and stability.

The continued aggression will further worsen the already dire humanitarian situation. Brunei Darussalam stresses the importance to ensure the continued safety of humanitarian aid workers and the unhindered efforts of peacekeeping operations.

Brunei Darussalam further reiterates the importance of upholding international law including humanitarian and human rights law and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of any country.

Brunei Darussalam also expresses its solidarity with Lebanon and Palestine. While we welcome the recent joint statement calling for an immediate 21-day ceasefire in Lebanon, we urge the United Nations Security Council to own up to its duties and responsibilities to take immediate steps towards ensuring de-escalation, with a view to achieving a permanent solution to the conflict in the Middle East.

The plight of the Palestinians for their inalienable rights to self-determination, peace and freedom remains at the core of the conflict in the Middle East. Brunei Darussalam reaffirms its steadfast support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, on the basis of the two-State solution, based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
