4 March 2024 - BRUNEI DARUSSALAM'S STATEMENT ON THE DEVELOPMENTS IN PALESTINE

BRUNEI DARUSSALAM'S STATEMENT ON THE DEVELOPMENTS IN PALESTINE

Brunei Darussalam reiterates its condemnation in the strongest possible terms over the ceaseless military aggressions and disproportionate use of force in the Gaza Strip by the Occupying Power, which continue to cause unjustifiable and tragic loss of innocent Palestinian lives.

The already dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has further deteriorated with the Occupying Power's continued deprivation of the Palestinians' basic rights including by implementing unlawful and unjust restrictions on the provision of humanitarian aid. The unbearable living conditions and protracted hardships of the Palestinians are unreservedly unacceptable.

The international community has a moral obligation to protect the Palestinians as well as provide sustained and unimpeded access to relief and essential humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.

We are deeply concerned over the longstanding impunity of the Occupying Power's continued international law violations. Therefore, we welcome the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 26 January 2024, and call on the international community to hold the Occupying Power accountable for their actions.

We further join the international community in demanding for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and for the Occupying Power to abide by international law, including international humanitarian law, international human rights law, the United Nations (UN) Charter and all relevant UN resolutions. We also urge the UN Security Council (UNSC), which has a special and moral responsibility, to faithfully fulfil its obligations to uphold international peace and security and ensure compliance by the Occupying Power with all relevant UN resolutions.

Brunei Darussalam remains resolute in its solidarity with the Palestinians in their struggle for peace, freedom and inalienable rights to self-determination and reaffirms its full support for the creation of a fully independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
