ASEAN FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING ON CYCLONE NARGIS

HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade joins ASEAN Foreign Ministers and delegates observing a minute of silence for the victims of Cyclone Nargis at the start of the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting in Singapore on 19 May 2008.
 

19 May 2008 – His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade this afternoon attended a Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting in Singapore.

The meeting was convened by ASEAN Standing Committee Chairman, H.E. George Yeo, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore, to consider relief efforts for the victims of Cyclone Nargis in Southern Myanmar.

The meeting received an assessment of the current situation and immediate needs in the affected areas from Myanmar Foreign Minister, H.E. Nyan Win, and reports from ASEAN Secretary-General, His Excellency Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, on the Secretariat’s regional and international efforts in response to the humanitarian needs of the people affected by the Cyclone.
 

ASEAN Foreign Ministers hold the Press Conference led by HE George Yeo, Foreign Minister of Singapore.
 

A Chairman’s Statement was issued in which the Foreign Ministers expressed appreciation for the international response to the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar and outlined a programme of relief and recovery under an ASEAN-led Taskforce, headed by Secretary-General Pitsuwan.

The Meeting ended with a Press Conference attended by all ASEAN Foreign Ministers.
