HIS MAJESTY ARRIVES IN SINGAPORE

18 November 2007 - His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, arrived in the Republic of Singapore, this afternoon to attend the 13th ASEAN Summit and its related Summits.  Accompanying His Majesty were Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam, and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Isteri Azrinaz Mazhar binti Hakim Mazhar.

On arrival at the Changi International Airport, Their Majesties and Her Royal Highness were greeted by His Excellency Ng Eng Hen, Minister of Manpower and Second Minister for Defence of the Republic of Singapore; and several senior officials of the Singapore Government.

Also at the airport were Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam; and officials of the High Commission of Brunei Darussalam in Singapore.

The 13th ASEAN Summit, is scheduled to start on Tuesday, 20 November, and will be attended by ASEAN Heads of State and Government. It will be followed by Summits of ASEAN + 3, ASEAN + China, ASEAN + Japan, ASEAN + Republic of Korea, ASEAN + India, the third East Asia Summit (EAS) and the ASEAN + European Union Commemorative Summit.

Prior to that, a Brunei Darussalam – Indonesia – Malaysia – Philippines – East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit will also be held on Monday 19 November. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is expected to chair the BIMP-EAGA Summit.

The theme of this year’s Summit is “Environment, Energy, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development”. The Heads of State and Government will have the opportunity to discuss ASEAN’s cooperation and its future direction as well as exchange views on regional and international concerns.

The ASEAN Heads of State and Government are expected to sign a number of key documents relating to developments in ASEAN and the theme of this year’s Summit.

The Third EAS will bring together Heads of State and Government of ASEAN Member Countries, Australia, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea and New Zealand.  The leaders will discuss issues of mutual interest.

The Heads of State and Government of the EAS participating countries are expected to sign the Singapore Declaration on Climate Change, Energy and the Environment.

The 12th ASEAN Summit and its related Summits were previously held in Cebu, the Republic of the Philippines in January 2007
