His Majesty Attends the Meeting with the Members of the Eminent Persons Group  

His Majesty joins ASEAN Leaders in a meeting with members of the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) on the ASEAN Charter at the Cebu International Convention. Also attending the meeting was HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

12 January 2007 – His Majesty the Sultan and yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam attended a meeting between ASEAN Heads of State and Government with members of the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) on the ASEAN Charter at the Cebu International Convention Centre.

During the meeting, His Majesty expressed appreciation to the EPG for coming up with recommendations on the ASEAN Charter and was pleased with their overall report. 

His Majesty commended the EPG’s resolve to realize an ASEAN Community and ultimately an ASEAN Union.  His Majesty further stated that the EPG’s proposal on strengthening ASEAN as an organization was very crucial for ASEAN’s future. 

His Majesty also said that he would like the High Level Task Force on the Drafting of the ASEAN Charter to use the EPG recommendations as the basis for drafting the Charter.

His Majesty supported the recommendations of the Eminent Persons Group on the need to ensure the ASEAN Secretariat is effective and emphasized that the Secretariat should be given the resources required, especially financial and personnel support as well as the necessary mandate in helping to carry out and facilitate ASEAN’s various programmes and agreements. 

His Majesty highlighted that ASEAN had made economic integration as priority and called on the need to ensure that a newly reformed secretariat fulfilled these objectives and recognized the importance of the political will in order to move forward
