HIS MAJESTY ATTENDS THE COMMEMORATIVE SUMMIT MARKING THE 15th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ASEAN-CHINA DIALOGUE RELATIONS

30 October 2006 - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam attended the Commemorative Summit marking the 15th Anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations.

The Summit was attended by Heads of State and Government of ASEAN member countries and the People’s Republic of China. His Excellency Premier Wen Jiabao, Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, President of the Republic of the Philippines co-chaired the Summit.

During the Summit, the Leaders reviewed achievements and cooperation of fifiteen years of ASEAN-China dialogue relations. They also discussed ways to strengthen the ASEAN-China strategic partnership.

At the closed session of the Summit, His Majesty delivered a Statement. His Majesty stated that he was pleased with the overall progress and achievements of the ASEAN-China relations and acknowledged that the history ASEAN and China shared over the last 15 years had been meaningful.

His Majesty also expressed his appreciation for China’s support to ASEAN and welcomed various Chinese proposals raised during the Summit. His Majesty stated that Brunei Darussalam would do everything it can as coordinator of the ASEAN-China dialogue over the next three years. His Majesty said that Brunei Darussalam felt privileged to be closely involved in the immediate future of ASEAN-China relations and was very excited at the prospect.

Later in the day, the Leaders signed the Joint Statement of the Commemorative Summit. The Joint statement outlined the overall progress of ASEAN-China relations, its achievement over the past years and also included proposals to be implemented in the future.
