2005 – His Majesty the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam attended the
2nd BIMP-EAGA [
Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-the
Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area ] in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Also joining the
leaders of the BIMP-EAGA countries in the
Summit were HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah,
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade and
the Hon. Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng, the
Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Trade.
The leaders agreed to adopt a five-year
roadmap from 2006 which identifies six
priority areas to push economic development
in the sub-region. The priority areas of the
roadmap are namely transportation,
infrastructure, information and
communication technology, natural resources,
tourism and small medium enterprises.
The leaders of the four countries said in a
Joint Statement after the 2nd BIMP-EAGA
Summit that they welcome the participation
of the Northern Territory of Australia and
China as development partners in the
BIMP-EAGA.
BIMP-EAGA is a sub-regional growth area
within the overall context of narrowing
development gaps in ASEAN and this area is
badly needed to accelerate its economic
development. ASEAN groups Indonesia,
Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand,
Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
They also agreed to convene the BIMP-EAGA
Summit annually in conjunction with the
ASEAN Summit. |
