His Majesty Attends Second day of APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting   

19 November 2005 – His Majesty the Sultan and yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam joined other APEC leaders for the Second Retreat Session held at Nurimaru APEC House in Busan.

The discussion at the session focused on issues ensuring a safe and transparent Asia-Pacific such as counter-terrorism, the Avian Influenza, disaster preparedness, energy security and anti-corruption.

At this session, His Majesty delivered a statement in which His Majesty spoke of the importance of governments’ preparedness in dealing with global challenges such as natural disasters, pandemics and terrorism.

On natural disasters and potential pandemics, His Majesty emphasized the need to acquire the necessary human and material resources to efficiently deal with such events and to address the impact on livelihoods especially on small businesses and employment.

On counter-terrorism, His Majesty stated the need to continue extending APEC’s valuable work by increasing every member’s capacity to play a vigorous part in dealing with terrorist. His majesty was also pleased to note the ongoing efforts in addressing the root causes of terrorism and commended Australia and Indonesia in taking the lead in hosting the interfaith dialogue.

His Majesty also spoke of the importance of regional and international cooperation and coordination in dealing with such global challenges in view of the scale of such events, and assured that Brunei Darussalam will work closely with the regional and international community in these efforts.
