At the Retreat Session, His Majesty and other APEC leaders discussed ways to advance free trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, and in particular the Leaders emphasized the importance for achieving a successful conclusion of the Doha Development Agenda by the end of 2006. The Leaders also agreed to release a Joint Statement on the Doha Development Agenda.

His Majesty extended appreciation to President Roh Moo-hyun for the excellent arrangements made for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. His Majesty said that APEC 2005 represented a test for APEC economics to continue to make progress in free trade in view of the global challenges the world was facing such as natural disasters and Avian Influenza which had an impact on the people’s economic livelihood.

His Majesty stressed Brunei Darussalam’s support of the Multilateral Trading System particularly the Doha Development Agenda as it offered benefits for developing countries, and therefore supported the Statement on the Doha Development Agenda.

His Majesty also expressed support for initiatives undertaken by a number of economies to further accelerate the free flow of trade such as the P4 that included Chile, New Zealand, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.

His Majesty also conveyed strong support for APEC’s long-standing call for emphasis to be placed on capacity building throughout its work programmes especially in the area of Economic and Technical Cooperation. In this regard, His Majesty welcomed the Busan Roadmap to Bogor Goals and thanked the Republic of Korea for its leadership in developing the Roadmap.
