His Majesty attends the ASEAN-US Leaders Meeting in Busan, Korea

18 November 2005 – His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam attended the ASEAN-US Leaders’ Meeting held in one of the leading hotels in Busan.

At the Meeting, the ASEAN Leaders and President George W Bush discussed ways to enhance the partnership and cooperation between ASEAN and the US in the areas of energy, trade, counter-terrorism and efforts to deal with the Avian influenza.

The leaders tasked officials to develop a Plan of Action to realize the ASEAN-US Enhanced Partnership and conclude the ASEAN-US Trade and Investment Agreement.

At the Meeting, His Majesty expressed pleasure in having the opportunity to meet and said that it was crucial to work together in view of the current global challenges. His majesty was concerned that natural disasters and severe health threats like the Avian Influenza, terrorism and economic insecurity had affected the confidence of the people in the future particularly among ordinary citizens in villages, communities, families and small businesses. His Majesty stressed the importance of governments to undertake simple practical ways to give the people the confidence that they need and therefore called on the US to provide the expertise to assist.

His Majesty stated that ASEAN had developed a programme of development and a vision on an ASEAN-US Enhanced Partnership, and therefore the US’ partnership in this cooperation would assist ASEAN in this endeavour.

His Majesty added that it was also important for ASEAN and the US to continue working together in enhancing the Enterprise for ASEAN initiative which served as a platform for economic cooperation between the two regions. His Majesty said this was a good way of building the many years of past cooperation between ASEAN and the United States.
