Traveling to Brunei Darussalam

All foreign visitors entering into Brunei Darussalam must have a valid visa and passport or travel document, as well as onward tickets and sufficient funds to support themselves while in the country.

Visa arrangements and requirements may vary by nationality. The length of validity of the visa is a maximum of 3 months.

Visa Arrangements:

Certain countries are exempted from the visa requirements for social, business, or professional visits depending on the number of days. All other nationals entering Brunei Darussalam must obtain visas beforehand from the High Commission.

Prerequisite Entry Requirement:

The visitor should have a valid passport or travel document recognised by the Government of Brunei Darussalam.

The passport must have a validity of 6 months before expiry when entering Brunei Darussalam.

Visa Requirements:

The following documents are required for the visa application process:

  • Passport of applicant;
  • Complete visa application form; (Click here for visa form)
  • Payment fee of AUD$20.00 for single entry or AUD$30.00 for multiple entries for each applicant. Cash, Postal Order or Bank Cheque are accepted and need to be made payable to "High Commission of Brunei Darussalam"
  • One (1) recent passport size photograph;
  • Copy of travel itinerary;
  • A pre-paid self-addressed envelope or assign a courier to deliver and pick up your application.

Visitors are advised to submit the above documents to the High Commission at least 30 days before travelling to Brunei Darussalam. This is to take into account any applications which may need to be forwarded to Brunei Darussalam for further processing.

Completed applications can either be presented to the High Commission in person or by a representative, or sent by mail. Applicants are solely responsible for the safety of their passports that are sent by mail.

Transit:

A Transit Visa issued on arrival is available. Kindly contact the High Commission for further details.

Employment:

For those entering Brunei Darussalam for employment purposes, visas cannot be granted without a valid work permit issued by the Department of Immigration and National Registration in Brunei Darussalam. Visitors are not allowed to engage in full/part-time work without permission from the Director of Immigration.

Renewal and Lost Passports

Bruneian nationals who need to renew or have lost their passports are advised to notify the High Commission as soon as possible.

For nationals who intend to return to Brunei within six months, another alternative is to apply for an Emergency Certificate (Sijil Darurat).

An application form to renew passports can be requested from the High Commission and should be returned complete with the following documents:

  • Explanatory letter detailing reasons for renewing or replacement of passport, addressed to the Director of Immigration and National Registration Department, Brunei Darussalam. Applicants should also include contact details in full.
  • Two (2) copies of Police Report (only for lost passports);
  • Two (2) copies of Brunei Passport (if applicable);
  • Four (4) passport-sized photos (with blue background);
  • Two (2) copies of birth certificate (both sides);
  • Two (2) copies of Brunei Identification Card (both sides);
  • Two (2) copies of Brunei Residence Permit (if applicable);
  • Certificate of Evidence of Resident Status (Form 283) issued by the Australian Department of Immigration (if applicable);
  • Letter of certification from present school/college/university (if studying) or employer (if working);
  • Two (2) pre-paid, self-addressed Registered or Express Post Envelopes;
  • For details on payment fee, kindly contact the High Commission.

Emergency Certificate (Sijil Darurat)

Bruneian citizens who have lost their passport while visiting Australia or neighbouring countries should apply for an emergency certificate (Sijil Darurat) through the High Commission as soon as possible.

This certificate is a one-way travel document to be used for return travel to Brunei Darussalam.

An application form for registration can be requested from the High Commission and should be returned complete with the following documents:

  • Explanatory letter on the reasons for an emergency certificate, addressed to the Director of Immigration and National Registration
  • Department, Brunei Darussalam;
  • Two (2) copies of Brunei Passport (if applicable);
  • Two (2) copies of Police Report (for lost passports);
  • Two (2) copies of Brunei Identity Card (both sides) or Identification Certificate (if available);
  • Two (2) copies of applicants Birth Certificate (both sides);
  • Letter of certification from present school/college/university (if studying) or employer (if working);
  • One (1) pre-paid, self-addressed Registered or Express Post Envelopes;
  • Three (3) passport-size photos;
  • Payment fee of AUD20.

A child of a Bruneian citizen born in a foreign country can also apply for an emergency certificate to be used for returning to Brunei. In this case, the application form and documents listed above should also be submitted with the additional documents, such as:

  • Two (2) copies of parents' Marriage Certificate;
  • Two (2) copies of parents' Birth Certificates (both sides);
  • Two (2) copies of parents' Identification Certificates;
  • Two (2) copies of parents' Passports;

Renewal of Certificate of Identification and Re-entry Permit

Permanent Residents of Brunei Darussalam who reside overseas and intend to return to Brunei Darussalam can apply for the renewal of their Certificate of Identification and Re-Entry Permit through the High Commission.

The High Commission advises for applications to be forwarded within three (3) months of the expiry date.

An application form for renewal can be requested from the High Commission and should be returned complete with the following documents:

  • Explanatory letter on the reasons for renewal of C.I. or Re-Entry Permit, addressed to the Director of Immigration and National
  • Registration Department, Brunei Darussalam.
  • Two (2) copies of Certificate of Identity;
  • Two (2) copies of current passport;
  • Two (2) copies of Birth Certificate (both sides);
  • Two (2) copies of Brunei Identity Card (both sides);
  • Two (2) copies of Brunei Residence Permit/Re-Entry Permit (if applicable);
  • Two (2) copies of Police Report (if C.I. is lost or stolen);
  • Two (2) copies of letter of certification from present school/college/university and one (1) copy of the High Commissioners AcademicStatus Form (if studying); OR
  • Two (2) copies of a certificate/letter of employment from current employer (if working);
  • Two (2) copies of a Marriage Certificate (if married);
  • Certificate of Evidence of Resident Status (Form 283) issued by the Australian Department of Immigration;
  • Three (3) recent passport-sized photos, bearing the name of applicant behind each photo;
  • Two (2) pre-paid, self-addressed Express Post Envelopes (medium-sized) or Pre-paid Certified Mail, or return courier bags.
  • For details on payment fees, kindly contact the High Commission.

Registration of Birth

A child born in Australia whose father is a citizen of Brunei Darussalam should be reported to the High Commission within a period of six months after the date of birth.

An application form for registration can be requested from the High Commission and should be returned complete with the following documents:

  • Two (2) copies of applicant's birth certificate;
  • Two (2) copies of parents' marriage certificate;
  • Two (2) copies of parents' birth certificate;
  • Two (2) copies parents' Identification Card;
  • Two (2) copies of parents' passport;
  • An explanatory letter from the father addressed to the Department of Immigration and National Registration, Brunei Darussalam stating reason(s) for being in Australia (including supporting documents, if any).

If an issuance of certification of citizenship is necessary, the application will need to be forwarded to the Immigration Department in Brunei Darussalam for their further consideration. The applicant's original birth certificate will also need to be submitted in this case.

Police Certificate of Good Conduct

Those requiring a Police Certificate of Good Conduct from Brunei Darussalam should submit the following documents to the High Commission:

  • An explanatory letter addressed to the Commissioner of the Royal Brunei Police Force explaining the reason for requesting the Certificate of Good Conduct, and some background of the applicant's previous stay in Brunei Darussalam.
  • Two (2) copies of all pages of applicant's current passport;
  • Current mailing address, email and contact number;
  • Two (2) self addressed pre-paid certified envelopes.
  • Fee of AUD55.00 per applicant (Cash, Postal Order or Bank Cheque made payable to "High Commission of Brunei Darussalam").

Note 1: Except for visa applications, it is procedure for the High Commission to forward all other applications to the Immigration Department in Brunei Darussalam for further consideration.

Registration Form for Brunei Darussalam Citizen in Australia

For Brunei Darussalam citizens travelling to Australia for holiday or employment purpose, it is advisable to register with the High Commission.

Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (Lags) Restrictions

To increase the passenger safety,   Australian and Brunei Darussalam Governments have legislated new rules on taking liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) for flights TO/TRANSIT/FROM IN Australia and flights FROM Brunei Darussalam, for ALL PASSENGERS boarding a flight in Australia & Brunei Darussalam (both joining and transit passengers from other airports).

Physical Currency And Bearer Negotiable Instruments (CBNI) Declaration 

Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD) announced that from 1st August 2011, every person moving into or out of Brunei Darussalam, Physical Currency and Bearer Negotiable Instruments with total value exceeding BND 15,000 (or its equivalent in a foreign currency) is required to declare / report such amount to the officers of the Royal Customs and Excise Department upon arrival or officers of Immigration and National Registration Department upon departure using the prescribed forms which will be made available at every control posts at all major entry and exit points of Brunei Darussalam.
