24 September 2021 - HANDOVER CEREMONY FOR THE VACCINE CONTRIBUTION FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN

On 24 September 2021, 100,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines contributed by the Government of Japan to Brunei Darussalam arrived at Brunei International Airport. 

A handover ceremony was held at the airport, attended by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd. Yusof, Minister of Foreign Affairs II of Brunei Darussalam on behalf of the Government of Brunei Darussalam. Representing the Government of Japan was His Excellency Eiji Yamamoto, Ambassador of Japan to Brunei Darussalam.   

Also in attendance were senior government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Health of Brunei Darussalam and representatives from the Embassy of Japan in Bandar Seri Begawan. 

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1984, Brunei Darussalam and Japan continue to share warm and friendly relations in mutually-beneficial areas, including energy, trade and investment, education, connectivity and people-to-people exchanges. On COVID-19 cooperation, Japan is also extending assistance in providing medical supplies and cold chain equipment through the Emergency Grant Aid In Improving Cold Chain initiative. 

Brunei Darussalam and Japan have also maintained close cooperation on regional and international issues of mutual interest. As an important Dialogue Partner, Japan has reaffirmed strong commitment in strengthening the ASEAN-Japan Strategic Partnership. Japan is contributing USD 1 million to the COVID-19 ASEAN Response Fund and USD 50 million for the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED).
